These speedy predators arrive in the Bay as the water warms up, typically around late June, and stay through September. They're often found near breaking schools of baitfish, so keep an eye out for surface activity. Trolling small spoons or Clark spoons behind a planer or inline weight is a highly effective tactic. A local tip: focus your efforts along the shipping channel edges and near structure like the gas docks or bridge pilings. High-speed retrieves are key to triggering strikes. Spanish Mackerel are known for their blistering runs, so use light tackle for maximum enjoyment. They are also delicious smoked or grilled.
