Speckled Trout

Although Wellington is not directly on the coast, its location provides access to the nearby saltwater estuaries and flats where speckled trout thrive. To target trout, you'll want to head east towards the Indian River Lagoon or the St. Lucie River. These areas offer ideal habitat for specks, with plenty of seagrass beds and oyster bars. The cooler months, from fall through spring, are generally the most productive for trout fishing. Focus your efforts around areas with good tidal flow and submerged structure. Live shrimp under a popping cork is a classic and effective presentation, but artificial lures like soft plastics and suspending jerkbaits can also be productive. A local tip is to launch your boat from one of the public ramps along the St. Lucie River and explore the flats to the south. The speckled trout in this area are known for their vibrant colors and willingness to strike a well-presented bait or lure.
