Speckled Trout
Speckled Trout, or Spotted Seatrout, are a prized catch in the waters surrounding Cape Carteret. Bogue Sound and the nearby marshes and creeks provide ideal habitat for these beautiful fish. The best time to target specks is during the cooler months, from late fall through early spring, when they move into the creeks and rivers to escape the cold. Live shrimp under a popping cork is a classic presentation, but artificial lures like soft plastics and suspending twitchbaits also work well. Access to productive areas is readily available from the public boat ramp at Emerald Isle Woods Park. Focus your efforts around oyster beds, docks, and grass flats, especially during periods of low light. The local Speckled Trout population is healthy, with opportunities to catch both smaller 'schoolies' and larger 'gator' trout. Be sure to handle them carefully if you plan to release them.
