Speckled Trout

Although Woonsocket is inland, a drive towards the coast will put you within range of Speckled Trout, also known as weakfish. Narragansett Bay is your best bet for targeting these beautiful fish. Focus your attention on areas with grassy shallows, creek mouths, and points with good current. Speckled Trout are ambush predators, so look for areas where they can hide and wait for baitfish. The best time to target them is during the spring and fall as water temperatures are more favorable. They don't tolerate extreme temperatures well. Early morning or late evening are often the most productive times. Consider using soft plastics on light tackle, working them slowly along the bottom or suspended under a popping cork. Locations around Wickford and the West Passage of Narragansett Bay can be particularly productive. Check the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management website for any specific regulations regarding Speckled Trout, as they can be subject to seasonal closures or size restrictions.
