Speckled Trout
Speckled Trout, or Spotted Seatrout, are a popular target for anglers fishing the saltwater estuaries around Surfside Beach. These fish thrive in the inshore waters, offering exciting light tackle action. The fall and spring months are generally considered the best times to fish for Speckled Trout here, as they move into the creeks and bays to feed. Focus your efforts around structure such as docks, oyster beds, and grass flats, especially during dawn and dusk. A productive local tactic is to use popping corks with live shrimp or artificial lures. Soft plastic shrimp imitations rigged on jigheads are also very effective. You can access prime fishing spots by boat from the many public ramps along the Intracoastal Waterway. Wading is also possible in some areas, but be mindful of tides and soft mud. The Speckled Trout in this area are known to be somewhat line-shy, so consider using fluorocarbon leaders. Always check the SCDNR regulations for size and bag limits.
