Spotted Bass

While largemouth get most of the attention in northeast Arkansas, Sedgwick also provides access to some decent spotted bass fishing. The Cache River system, particularly the faster-flowing sections and areas with rocky bottoms, holds a population of spotted bass. These fish tend to prefer slightly clearer, cooler water than largemouth, so focus on areas with some current and avoid the muddiest backwaters. Spring and early summer, when the water is warming up, can be very productive. Small crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and tube baits are effective for targeting spotted bass. Look for them around submerged rocks, fallen trees, and other structure that provides cover. A key to success is downsizing your presentation compared to what you might use for largemouth. The spotted bass in the Cache River generally range from 1-2 pounds, but you might find some slightly larger specimens. Public access points along Highway 18 provide convenient access to the river. Keep an eye on water clarity, as spotted bass are more sensitive to muddy water than largemouth. Check the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission regulations before fishing.
