Spotted Bass

While not as widely known as other Maryland locations, Frederick County offers some surprisingly good spotted bass fishing. These feisty fish thrive in the county's smaller rivers and streams, like the upper reaches of the Monocacy River and its tributaries. Look for rocky runs, riffles, and pools where spots can ambush prey. Light tackle is key – think spinning rods with 6-8 pound test line. Small crankbaits, tubes, and finesse worms are effective lures. Spring and fall are generally the best times to target spotted bass, as they become more active during these periods. Access to the Monocacy River is available at several points, including the Monocacy River Natural Resource Management Area. Be aware that wading can be necessary in some areas, so appropriate footwear is a must. Spotted bass in this region tend to be smaller than largemouth, but their aggressive strikes and fighting ability make them a fun target.
