Spotted Bass

Spotted Bass aren't traditionally a primary target in the Lovington, New Mexico area, but with persistence and the right approach, you might be rewarded. The scattered reservoirs and stock ponds in the region, while primarily managed for other species, can sometimes hold populations of spotted bass, likely introduced incidentally. Focus your efforts on bodies of water with rocky structure, submerged timber, and clear water – these are the habitats where spotted bass are most likely to thrive. Spring and fall, when water temperatures are in the 60-70 degree range, are your best bet. Small crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and jigs that mimic crawfish or small baitfish are effective lures. A local tactic is to target areas near dam faces or spillways, as these areas often concentrate baitfish and, consequently, spotted bass. Keep in mind that spotted bass populations are likely limited, so practice catch-and-release to help maintain the fishery. Access to some ponds may require landowner permission, so always be respectful and seek permission before fishing.
