Spotted Bass

Spotted bass, also known as Kentucky bass, offer a challenging alternative to largemouth in the waters near Mangum, Oklahoma. While not as abundant as largemouth in some areas, they are present in the Salt Fork River and some of the smaller creeks and ponds around Mangum. They thrive in areas with current and rocky structure. The best time to target spotted bass is generally during the spring and fall when water temperatures are moderate. Look for them near rocky bluffs, submerged timber, and creek channels. Small crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and jigs are effective lures. A local tip: Because spotted bass prefer current, focus your efforts on areas where the Salt Fork narrows or where creeks enter the river. Also, be aware that spotted bass tend to be smaller than largemouth, with most fish averaging between 1-2 pounds. They are aggressive fighters for their size, though, providing a fun challenge for anglers.
