Spotted Bass

Irmo provides a strategic location for targeting spotted bass, with close proximity to Lake Murray. While largemouth get a lot of attention, the spotted bass population here is strong and provides a unique angling experience. Spots tend to favor deeper, clearer water and rocky structure compared to largemouth. Look for them around points, humps, and bluffs, particularly those with rocky bottoms. The cooler months of fall and early spring are often the most productive times to target them. Downsizing your presentation and using finesse techniques like drop-shotting, shaky heads, or small crankbaits can be very effective. A local tip: Pay attention to water clarity. Spots often prefer clearer water than largemouth, so focus on areas with good visibility. Lake Murray's spotted bass are known for their aggressive strikes and powerful fights, making them a fun and challenging target. Public access is readily available via numerous boat ramps around the lake.
