Steelhead

Steelhead in the Oak Island area of Minnesota, primarily found in the tributaries of Lake of the Woods, offer a challenging but rewarding fishing experience. These migratory fish are most accessible during their spawning runs in the spring (April-May) and fall (October-November). Focus your efforts in the Rainy River and other smaller streams that flow into the lake. Look for areas with gravel bottoms and moderate current – these are prime spawning locations. Using natural presentations like egg sacs or nymphs under a float is a common and effective technique. A local tip: Access to some of these streams can be limited, so be sure to research public access points and obtain any necessary permits. The Steelhead found here are known for their strong fighting ability, often making multiple runs and jumps. Be prepared for a test of your angling skills and equipment.
