Striped Bass

If you're chasing striped bass in central Georgia, don't overlook the Oconee River near Chester. While not as renowned as some of the larger reservoirs, the Oconee provides a unique riverine striper experience. Spring and fall are prime times, as the stripers migrate upstream to spawn or feed heavily before winter. Focus on areas around the Highway 16 bridge – it's a popular access point with decent bank fishing opportunities. Launching a small boat or kayak can open up even more of the river. A key local tip: pay attention to water levels. After heavy rains, the river can become muddy, making it harder to entice strikes. Use larger, brighter lures in these conditions. The stripers here tend to be opportunistic feeders, so shad-imitating swimbaits and crankbaits worked along current breaks are productive. Remember to check the Georgia Department of Natural Resources regulations for size and creel limits.
