Striped Bass

While Salisbury, Maryland is primarily known for its freshwater fishing, the tidal influence of the Wicomico River allows for Striped Bass (Rockfish) to venture upriver, especially during their spawning runs. Though not as consistent as targeting them in the Chesapeake Bay, opportunities exist, particularly in the spring and fall. Look for them around bridge pilings, channel edges, and where smaller creeks enter the Wicomico. Live eels or cut bait are effective, as are large swimbaits and crankbaits. Be aware that Striped Bass fishing is heavily regulated, so check the current regulations for size and creel limits before heading out. A practical tip: Focus your efforts near the Route 50 bridge or the area around the Salisbury City Park, as these areas often concentrate baitfish. Access to the river is available at the Schumaker Landing. While the stripers here may not be trophy-sized, catching one in freshwater this far upriver can be a rewarding experience.
