Striped Bass

If you're looking to tangle with some Striped Bass in southern New Mexico, Alamogordo offers a shot at these hard-fighting fish. While not a renowned striper destination, the local reservoirs, particularly Bonito Lake and, occasionally, smaller irrigation impoundments, can hold surprises. Spring and fall are your best bets, as the stripers follow baitfish migrations and are more active in cooler water temperatures. During the warmer months, focus your efforts on early mornings and late evenings. A local tip: Bonito Lake can get crowded, especially on weekends, so arrive early to secure a good spot. Also, be aware that water levels can fluctuate significantly depending on irrigation demands. Check local reports before heading out. The stripers here aren't giants, averaging 2-5 pounds, but they put up a good fight on light tackle. Look for submerged structure and points where the wind is blowing in, as these areas often concentrate baitfish and, consequently, stripers.
