Striped Bass
Striped bass fishing near Taos Ski Valley means venturing beyond the immediate alpine environment. These fish aren't found in the high-mountain streams, but several reservoirs to the east and south offer opportunities. Ute Lake, again, is your primary destination for stripers within reasonable driving distance. Spring and fall are the peak seasons. In the spring, focus on areas near the dam and in the river channel as the stripers move to spawn. In the fall, they'll be actively feeding on shad. Trolling crankbaits or casting swimbaits are effective techniques. Eagle Nest Lake is an outside possibility, but Ute Lake holds a more significant population. A boat is highly recommended for covering the vast expanse of Ute Lake. Be mindful of the wind, which can create challenging conditions. The stripers in Ute Lake are known for their hard fighting ability, so hold on tight!
