Striped Bass
While South Dakota isn't exactly known for its striped bass fishery, Salem offers a unique, albeit limited, opportunity to target these fish in freshwater. Lake Yankton, although a bit of a drive from Salem, is stocked with striped bass and offers the best chance of hooking one. These stripers aren't self-sustaining, so the population depends on ongoing stocking efforts. Spring and fall are generally the best times, when the water temperatures are moderate, and the stripers are actively feeding. Trolling crankbaits or casting swimbaits near the dam or in the main lake channel are productive techniques. Check the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks website for the latest stocking reports and regulations. Keep in mind that these fish can be sensitive to handling, so practice catch and release to help maintain the population. Also, be aware of the potential for zebra mussel infestations and take precautions to prevent their spread.
