Cobb Island is a prime location to target Tautog, or 'blackfish,' in Maryland, thanks to its proximity to the Chesapeake Bay's structure-rich waters. Focus your efforts around submerged pilings, rock piles, and bridge abutments – these areas hold the crustaceans and shellfish that Tautog love. The best time to fish for Tautog here is during the fall and spring when water temperatures are moderate. These fish are notoriously finicky, so natural presentations are key. Green crabs, fiddler crabs, and clams are top baits. A local tip: Pay close attention to the current. Tautog will often hold tight to structure on the down-current side, waiting for food to wash by. Adjust your sinker weight accordingly to keep your bait in the strike zone. The Tautog population in this area can produce some surprisingly large fish, so be prepared for a fight!
