Targeting Tautog, also known as Blackfish, near Gibson Island, Maryland, requires a focus on structure in the Chesapeake Bay. These fish are masters of camouflage and prefer rocky bottoms, wrecks, and pilings where they can ambush prey. The prime time for Tautog fishing is during the colder months, particularly late fall and winter, when they move inshore to spawn. Fishing with baited jigs or hooks is the standard approach. Green crabs are the bait of choice, but clams and mussels can also be effective. A local tip: use a heavy jig to keep your bait on the bottom in the strong currents that are common in this area.
