Walleye

While Berkeley isn't exactly a walleye mecca, don't count it out entirely. The Des Plaines River, which flows nearby, holds a modest population of walleye that can be targeted, especially during the spring and fall. Look for them around deeper holes, current breaks near bridge pilings, and rocky areas. The best time to fish is typically in the spring (late March-May) as the water warms and the walleye move upstream to spawn. Fall (late September-November) is also productive as they feed heavily before winter. A practical tip is to access the river from one of the Forest Preserve District of Cook County access points. Wading is possible in some areas, but be mindful of the current and water levels. Using jigs tipped with minnows or nightcrawlers is a classic and effective technique. The walleye here tend to be on the smaller side, but persistence can pay off with a respectable catch.
