While Iroquois, Illinois isn't exactly a walleye mecca, determined anglers can find some success in the nearby Kankakee River. This river system offers a unique, more natural walleye environment compared to large reservoirs. Spring and fall are your prime times, with the pre-spawn and post-spawn periods being particularly productive. Look for walleye around rocky areas, current breaks, and submerged timber. Focus your efforts on areas where the river narrows or where tributaries enter the main channel. A local tip: the area around the Route 1 bridge is a popular access point, but be prepared for some bank fishing as boat access can be limited in some areas. Also, pay attention to water clarity; the Kankakee can get muddy quickly after rain, which will shut down the bite. Walleye in this region tend to be on the smaller side, but the thrill of catching them in a river environment makes it worthwhile.
