Walleye enthusiasts in the Lockport, Illinois, area will find opportunities in the Des Plaines River and the I&M Canal. The Des Plaines, while perhaps better known for other species, does hold a population of walleye that can be targeted with the right approach. The I&M Canal, with its slower-moving water and varied structure, can also be productive. Target the spring and fall months when water temperatures are cooler and the walleye are more active. Look for walleye around current breaks, submerged timber, and rocky areas. A key tip is to focus on areas where the canal or river narrows, creating pinch points where walleye tend to congregate. Jigs tipped with minnows or nightcrawlers are often effective, as are crankbaits that mimic the local forage. Access to the I&M Canal is generally good, with several access points and parking areas along its banks. The Des Plaines can be more challenging to navigate, so be sure to check water levels and current conditions before heading out. While trophy-sized walleye are rare, you can still expect to find some respectable fish in these waters.
