If you're targeting walleye near Manhattan, Illinois, your best bet is to head to the Kankakee River. While not a walleye mecca, the Kankakee offers pockets where these fish congregate, especially in the spring and fall. Spring, just after ice-out, sees walleye moving upstream to spawn, creating excellent opportunities around rocky areas and current breaks. Fall is another prime time as they fatten up for winter. Focus your efforts around the Dresden Island Dam area for increased walleye activity. A local tip: try using jigs tipped with minnows or nightcrawlers worked slowly along the bottom. Be aware that river levels can fluctuate rapidly, so check conditions before heading out.
