If you're looking for walleye near Chicago, consider heading southwest to McCook. While not a walleye mecca, the Des Plaines River offers pockets of opportunity, especially near structure and current breaks. Spring and fall are prime times, as walleye move upriver to spawn or fatten up before winter. Focus on areas around the I-55 and I-294 bridges; the pilings and riprap hold fish. A jig tipped with a minnow or nightcrawler is a classic presentation. Be aware that river levels can fluctuate rapidly after heavy rains, so check conditions before you go. Access is available at various points along the river, though some spots require a bit of a walk. The walleye here aren't generally huge, but a few in the 3-5 pound range are always possible. Target areas of slightly deeper water near the edges of the channel. Don't overlook the Little Calumet River either; it connects to the Des Plaines and offers similar walleye habitat.
