Walleye

Walleye aren't the most common target in Palos Park, but dedicated anglers can find them with a bit of effort in the Des Plaines River. While not a renowned walleye fishery, the river does hold a population, particularly in areas with deeper pools and current breaks. Focus your efforts near the I-294 bridge or the stretch of river near the Palos Trail System. Spring and fall are the best times to target walleye, as they migrate upstream to spawn or seek refuge from colder temperatures. A local tip is to fish after a period of rain, as the increased flow can stir up baitfish and attract walleye. Use jigs tipped with minnows or nightcrawlers, and work them slowly along the bottom. Be mindful of the river's fluctuating water levels and potential for snags. While the walleye may not be trophy-sized, the challenge of catching them in this urban river adds to the appeal.
