If you're looking to tangle with walleye in northern Illinois, the Illinois River near Peru is a solid bet. This section of the river, influenced by the confluence with the Vermilion River, offers diverse habitat that walleye love. Look for them around submerged structure, current breaks, and near the many boat ramps that provide easy access. Spring and fall are prime times. As the water warms in spring, walleye move upstream to spawn, and in the fall, they feed heavily to prepare for winter. A local tip: focus your efforts around the Route 251 bridge – the pilings and riprap there attract and hold walleye. Also, be aware that the Illinois River can fluctuate significantly in depth, so check river levels before heading out. The walleye in this area are generally healthy, and you'll find a mix of sizes, with the potential for some real trophies.
