Walleye

Walleye in the waters off Winthrop Harbor present a unique challenge, as they're not as abundant as in some inland lakes. However, persistent anglers can find success by focusing on areas with structure and current. The best times to target walleye are typically during the spring and fall, when water temperatures are cooler. Try trolling crankbaits or jigs near the bottom in areas with rocky reefs or drop-offs. Night fishing can also be productive, especially around lighted areas near the harbor. A local tip is to pay attention to the wind direction, as walleye often congregate on the windward side of structures. Focus on areas where the waves are crashing into the rocks. While boat access is preferred, some shore fishing opportunities exist around the harbor. Be prepared to experiment with different lures and presentations until you find what the fish are biting on.
