Walleye

Walleye fishing near Ennis, Montana, centers around Hebgen Lake, a reservoir on the Madison River. While Hebgen is better known for its trout, it holds a solid population of walleye that are often overlooked. Targeting walleye here requires a slightly different approach than in traditional walleye fisheries. Spring and fall are the prime times, as the walleye move into shallower water to spawn or feed before winter. Trolling crankbaits or jigging along the weed lines and rocky points are effective tactics. Focus on areas near the Grayling Arm and the Madison River inlet. A good tip is to use your electronics to locate submerged structure, as walleye tend to congregate around it. There are several boat ramps around Hebgen Lake, but be aware that the lake can be windy, especially in the afternoons. The walleye in Hebgen Lake tend to be smaller on average than in other Montana reservoirs, but the beautiful scenery and relatively light fishing pressure make it a worthwhile trip.
