If you're targeting walleye in the Ithaca area, Cayuga Lake is your primary destination. This deep, glacially carved lake offers ideal habitat for walleye, with plenty of rocky structure and weed beds that hold baitfish. The best time to fish for walleye here is during the spring and fall months, particularly during the post-spawn period in April and May and again from late September through November. Focus your efforts near the southern end of the lake, where the lake narrows and the tributaries enter, creating current breaks and attracting baitfish. Trolling crankbaits or using jigs tipped with nightcrawlers or minnows are popular and effective techniques. A local tip is to pay attention to the thermocline, as walleye will often suspend just above it. There are several public boat launches around Cayuga Lake, including the Allan H. Treman State Marine Park in Ithaca, providing easy access. Be aware that Cayuga Lake can get rough quickly, so always check the marine forecast before heading out.
