If you're looking to tangle with some Wisconsin walleye, Westfield offers some under-the-radar opportunities. The region's network of smaller rivers and flowages connected to the Fox River are the key here, rather than the larger, more heavily fished lakes. Spring, right after the walleye spawn, is prime time as the fish are actively feeding and recovering. Focus your efforts on areas with current breaks, such as near bridge pilings or confluences of smaller creeks. Another productive time is late fall, as walleye fatten up before winter. For bank access, try the public access points along the Mecan River. A local tip: many of these waterways are relatively shallow, so wading and using techniques like jigging or casting crankbaits can be very effective. Be prepared for stained water conditions, and adjust your lure colors accordingly. The walleye here tend to run smaller to medium size, but the chance to fish in a less crowded environment makes it worthwhile.
