Weakfish

Weakfish, also known as grey trout, are a prized but often elusive target around Block Island. These fish favor areas with structure and strong currents, particularly around the mouths of estuaries and along sandy beaches. Spring and early summer are the prime times to target weakfish as they migrate into the area. Look for them near eelgrass beds and drop-offs. Soft plastics, small jigs, and live shrimp are all effective baits. A slow, steady retrieve often works best. A local tip: weakfish have delicate mouths, so use light wire hooks and avoid setting the hook too hard. The strong currents around Block Island often concentrate baitfish. Therefore, fishing near tide changes can be productive. The Block Island weakfish population has seen fluctuations in recent years, so practice catch and release to help protect this valuable resource.
