White Bass

White bass enthusiasts will find some exciting action near Orangeburg, South Carolina, particularly during their spring spawning runs. While not as widely known as other species, the white bass fishery in the Santee Cooper lake system (accessible with a short drive) can be fantastic. The key is timing: the spring run, typically from late February through April, is when these fish congregate in large numbers as they move upstream to spawn. Look for them in the Congaree River and Wateree River tributaries. Small crankbaits, spinners, and jigs are effective lures. Focus on areas with current, such as below dams or at the mouths of creeks. A boat is highly recommended for accessing the best fishing spots, but some bank fishing opportunities exist near bridge crossings. Be prepared for some fast-paced action when you find them. White bass are known for their aggressive strikes and schooling behavior, making for a memorable fishing experience.
