White Bass

While China, Texas, might be better known for its proximity to larger waterways, the smaller creeks and rivers in the area hold surprising numbers of white bass, especially during their spring spawning runs. The Neches River, while a bit of a drive, is the primary draw. The white bass will move up into the smaller tributaries and creeks that feed into the main river to spawn when water temperatures hit the right mark. This usually occurs between late February and early April. Target areas with current breaks, such as fallen trees or bridge pilings. Small spinners, crankbaits, or even live minnows can be effective. Access can be a challenge, so look for road crossings or areas where public land borders the creeks. Be mindful of private property and ask permission if needed. The white bass here tend to be smaller than those found in larger lakes, but the thrill of catching them in a smaller, more intimate setting is worth the effort.
