White Bass

If you're looking for some fast-paced action in the Dallas area, the White Bass runs near Cockrell Hill, Texas, are hard to beat. These fish, locally known as 'sandies', congregate in the Elm Fork of the Trinity River and its tributaries during their spring spawning run, typically from late February through April. Focus your efforts around shallow, moving water near rocky points and creek mouths. Bank access is available at several parks along the river, but be prepared for some walking. A small jig or spinner retrieved quickly is often all it takes to entice a strike. Remember that water levels can fluctuate rapidly, so check conditions before heading out. During the summer months, you can still find white bass in deeper parts of the river and in nearby reservoirs like Mountain Creek Lake, though they tend to be more scattered.
