White Bass

White bass, often called 'sand bass' locally, provide excellent fishing action in the Dallas area, particularly during their spring spawning runs. Head to rivers and creeks that feed into larger reservoirs like Lake Texoma or Lavon Lake. The peak season is typically March and April when the fish migrate upstream to spawn. Look for areas with current breaks, rocky bottoms, and submerged timber. Small jigs, spinners, and crankbaits are effective lures. A local tactic is to use tandem rigs with two different lures to increase your chances of getting a bite. Keep an eye out for birds diving, as this often indicates schools of white bass feeding on shad. Remember that white bass are a schooling fish, so if you catch one, there are likely more nearby. Be mindful of water levels, as high or low water can affect their spawning migration and accessibility.
