White Bass

Crappie fishing might be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Texas, but Mountain City offers a unique opportunity to chase White Bass in a Hill Country setting. The Blanco River, while known for its scenic beauty, also holds a decent population of White Bass, especially during their spring spawning runs. These fish will migrate upstream, congregating in areas with current and gravel bottoms. Small jigs and spinners are effective lures. Keep an eye out for birds diving, as this often indicates a school of White Bass feeding on the surface. Local knowledge suggests that the area near the FM 3237 bridge is a consistent producer during the spawn. Be aware that the river can be swift-moving at times, so exercise caution when wading or fishing from the bank. Remember to check water levels before your trip, as heavy rains can make the river unfishable.
