White Bass

White bass, also known as sand bass, provide exciting action near Sunset Valley, Texas, particularly during their spring spawning runs. Lake Travis and Lake Austin are your best bets. When the water temperature hits the sweet spot (around 60 degrees), these fish migrate upstream in droves, congregating in the creeks and river channels feeding the lakes. Look for them in the Pedernales River arm of Lake Travis or the Colorado River above Lake Austin. Small crankbaits, spinners, and jigs are all effective lures. A local tactic is to watch for birds diving on schools of shad, as the white bass will be feeding aggressively below. Be prepared for crowded conditions during the peak of the run, especially on weekends. Launching a boat at Mansfield Dam on Lake Travis offers quick access to the Pedernales. Remember to practice catch and release to help sustain this fantastic fishery.
