White Bass

If you're looking for some fast-paced freshwater action in the Blue Ridge foothills, Rocky Mount, Virginia offers some excellent white bass fishing. Smith Mountain Lake and Philpott Lake are the main draws, both known for their healthy white bass populations. These fish are aggressive and readily take lures, making them a fun target for anglers of all skill levels. Spring is prime time, as the white bass move up the rivers and creeks to spawn. Look for them near the mouths of the Blackwater and Roanoke Rivers in Smith Mountain Lake. Fall can also be productive as they school up to feed before winter. For bank access, try the various bridge crossings along the rivers; just be mindful of traffic. On Philpott Lake, the area around the dam is a popular spot. Local tip: White bass in this area often hit shad-imitation lures hard, so stock up on small crankbaits, spinners, and swimbaits. Early morning and late evening are often the most productive times.
