Gulfport's brackish waters are a haven for Black Drum, offering anglers the chance to battle these bruisers. Don't let their bottom-feeding reputation fool you; Black Drum can be a thrilling catch. Focus your efforts around structures like docks, bridges, and oyster reefs in the Back Bay of Biloxi and the channels leading into the Gulf. While they can be caught year-round, spring and fall are particularly productive, coinciding with their spawning season. Fresh or frozen shrimp, fished on the bottom with a Carolina rig, is a go-to bait. The Point Cadet Marina offers excellent access to these fishing grounds. Be aware that Black Drum often travel in schools, so if you catch one, stick around – there are likely more nearby. These fish can get quite large, so be sure to use tackle that can handle a good fight.
