Black Drum

If you're after a hard-fighting fish with a unique taste, Pascagoula's Black Drum population won't disappoint. These bottom-dwellers thrive in the muddy flats and channels of the Pascagoula River and the surrounding bayous. Spring and fall migrations offer the best opportunities to hook into a sizable Drum. Target areas with oyster beds or submerged structure, as these attract the crustaceans and shellfish that make up their diet. A Carolina rig with a chunk of fresh shrimp or crab is a surefire method. A local tip: the waters around the Chevron refinery outfall often hold good numbers of Drum, but be aware of any posted restrictions. Also, be prepared for a strong fight; Black Drum are known for their powerful runs. Pay attention to the tides, as Drum are often more active during moving water. Get ready for some serious rod-bending action!
