Black Sea Bass

While not as widely targeted as other species, Black Sea Bass offer excellent table fare and can be reliably found around St. Simons Island's offshore reefs and wrecks. These fish prefer deeper water, so focus your efforts in areas with significant structure. Bottom fishing with squid, cut bait, or jigs is the most effective method. The best time to target Black Sea Bass is during the cooler months, from late fall through early spring, when they congregate in larger numbers. Pay attention to the current; a strong current may require heavier weights to keep your bait on the bottom. Consider using a multi-hook rig to increase your chances of a hookup. The artificial reefs located several miles offshore hold good numbers of Black Sea Bass. Be sure to consult a local chart to identify these locations.
