Sheepshead

St. Simons Island offers excellent sheepshead fishing, primarily around structure in the saltwater and brackish waters. These fish are notorious for their subtle bites, so focus your efforts around docks, pilings, rock jetties, and oyster beds. The best time to target sheepshead here is during the spring and fall when water temperatures are moderate and they're actively feeding. They move inshore to spawn as water temperatures rise. A fiddler crab is your best bet for bait, fished on a jig head or Carolina rig right next to the structure. Pay close attention to the tides; incoming tides often bring cleaner water and increased sheepshead activity. The pier at the south end of the island is a popular and accessible spot, but be prepared to compete with other anglers.
