Sheepshead

Darien, Georgia, offers some excellent sheepshead fishing, particularly around structures in the coastal waterways. These convict fish are abundant around docks, bridges, and oyster beds. The best time to target sheepshead is during the cooler months, from late fall to early spring, when they congregate to spawn. Fiddler crabs are the bait of choice, but barnacles scraped directly from pilings also work well. Try fishing around the pilings of the I-95 bridge over the Darien River; it's a known hotspot. A long-shank hook is essential for getting a good hookset past their crushing teeth. The sheepshead in this area are known for their impressive size, so be prepared for a battle!
