Sheepshead

Jekyll Island and its surrounding waters are an excellent place to target Sheepshead, especially if you enjoy fishing around structure. These convict-striped fish are abundant around docks, bridges, and oyster bars. Spring and early summer are peak seasons when they're spawning. Fiddler crabs are the go-to bait, but live shrimp or barnacles also work well. Fish vertically, dropping your bait right next to the structure. The St. Andrews Sound bridge is a known hotspot, but be prepared for heavy current. You can access the bridge from the fishing pier on the south end. Another productive area is the Jekyll River docks. Sheepshead are notorious bait stealers, so use a small, sharp hook and be ready to set it quickly. They fight hard, so be prepared for a good battle!
