Black Sea Bass

Brooklyn's waters offer surprisingly good Black Sea Bass fishing, particularly around structure in the New York Harbor and further offshore. These fish are structure-oriented, so wrecks, reefs, and rock piles are prime targets. The season typically runs from late spring through fall, with the warmest months often producing the largest fish. Bottom fishing with jigs or baited hooks is the most effective method. Squid and clams are popular bait choices. A local tip: many of the party boats departing from Sheepshead Bay target Black Sea Bass, offering a great way to access offshore hotspots if you don't have your own boat. Be prepared for some current, especially around the harbor's shipping channels, and use heavier weights to keep your bait on the bottom. Black Sea Bass are known for their aggressive strikes, so be ready for a good fight.
