Decatur, Arkansas, might not be the first place that comes to mind for blue catfish, but the Illinois River, which flows nearby, holds a decent population. While not known for monster blues, you can find some respectable fish if you know where to look. Focus on the deeper holes and bends of the river, especially where there's current. Summer nights are particularly productive, as the blues become more active in the cooler temperatures. A key tip is to use fresh cut bait, such as shad or sunfish, and fish it on a Carolina rig near the bottom. Be prepared for snags, as the river bottom can be littered with debris. Access to the Illinois River can be limited in some areas, so research public access points beforehand.
