Blue Catfish

Coolidge, Georgia, puts you within striking distance of some excellent blue catfish opportunities. The nearby rivers, especially the Ochlockonee and Flint, hold good populations of these whiskered giants. Targeting blue catfish is best from late spring through fall, when the water temperatures are warmer and the fish are actively feeding. Look for them in deep holes, around submerged structure, and in areas with current. Cut bait, such as shad or mullet, is the go-to bait for blues. Use heavy tackle and strong hooks, as these fish can grow to impressive sizes. While trophy-sized blues are certainly possible, you'll also encounter plenty of smaller, eater-sized fish. Access to the rivers is available at various public boat ramps and bank fishing spots. Local tip: Night fishing can be particularly productive for blue catfish, as they tend to be more active under the cover of darkness. Bring a good light and be prepared for a long night of fishing.
