Blue Catfish

Blue catfish are a challenging but rewarding target in the waters around Ellijay, Georgia. While not as abundant as channel cats, blues can reach impressive sizes in the deeper sections of the Cartecay and Ellijay Rivers after they converge to form the Coosawattee. Look for them near submerged timber, deep holes, and areas with strong current. Winter and early spring are often the best times to target blues, as they congregate in deeper water. Fresh cut bait, such as shad or skipjack herring, is a proven choice. Be prepared for a fight, as these fish can be incredibly strong. Access to the rivers can be found at various public access points along Highway 52 and Highway 76. Be aware of changing water levels, especially after heavy rains. A heavy-duty rod and reel are essential when targeting these larger catfish; local anglers recommend using at least 30-pound test line.
