Blue Catfish

While not as widely known as other catfish hotspots in Georgia, the Chattahoochee River near Helen does hold a population of blue catfish. Targeting them in this area requires a bit of strategy. Focus on the deeper holes and slower currents of the river, especially where it widens. These fish tend to congregate near submerged structures like fallen trees or rock piles. The best time to fish for blues here is during the warmer months, particularly late spring through early fall. Night fishing can also be productive. A key local tip is to use cut bait like shad or bream, as these are readily available food sources. Public access to the river is limited, so consider using a small boat or kayak to reach prime fishing spots. Be aware of the strong currents and potential hazards in the river.
