Blue Catfish

Suwanee, Georgia, provides access to some fantastic blue catfish angling in the Chattahoochee River and, more notably, Lake Lanier. Lanier holds some truly impressive blue cats, and they're a popular target for anglers seeking a trophy. The cooler months, from late fall through early spring, are generally considered the best time to target blues, as they are actively feeding to prepare for the spawn. Look for them in deeper channels, around submerged timber, and near the dam. For local intel, consider using fresh cut bait – gizzard shad is a local favorite – fished on a Carolina rig or a three-way rig. Many anglers also find success drifting with large chunks of cut bait. Be prepared for a fight; these fish can pull hard! Public boat ramps are plentiful on Lake Lanier, but be sure to check lake levels and ramp conditions before heading out. Remember to have appropriate tackle; heavy rods and reels spooled with strong line are essential for landing these giants.
