Blue Catfish

If you're after blue catfish in the Bernalillo area, the Rio Grande and its associated reservoirs offer your best shot. While not as renowned as some southern catfish hotspots, the Rio Grande does hold a population of blues that can reach impressive sizes. Focus your efforts in deeper holes and channels, especially those near structure like fallen trees or bridge pilings. Spring and summer are generally the most productive times, as the warmer water encourages catfish activity. A key to success here is using fresh, oily bait. Cut bait like carp or shad is a local favorite. Be aware that the river can experience significant fluctuations in water level, so pay attention to current conditions and adjust your tactics accordingly. Cochiti Lake, a short drive north, can also produce blue catfish, particularly in the coves and along the dam face. Remember to use heavy tackle, as these fish can put up a serious fight.
